Course materials generally consist of textbooks as well as audio and/or video recordings of related topical seminars, all available via online download from BYC’s website. Most of the course material is proprietary to CSB and is not available from other sources. For supplemental and more advanced levels of study, individual instructors may recommend additional readings and learning resources to their students.
In addition, BYC provides an extensive online library of textual and audiovisual learning resources as well as links to other pertinent web-based learning resources, an e-forum, study guides for each course, and personal academic advisors assigned to each student.
LIBRARY
The BYC library accessible through its website includes an extensive collection of traditional texts on ancient Indian wisdom, practice, and culture related to Bhakti Yoga. It also includes many historical as well as contemporary commentaries by scholars of the Bhakti Yoga tradition on various topics pertinent to BYC’s educational programs. Audio and video recordings of CSB academic conferences and seminars are also available through its virtual library.
E-FORUM
The e-forum available on the BYC website provides students with the possibility of asking questions that their instructors will generally answer within a day or so. In addition, this e-forum enables students to participate in discussions with other students as well as find answers to their questions by searching the archive of previous inquiries and discussions. All BYC instructors are provided a facilitator’s manual to help them make the best use of this e-forum for their students.
COURSE STUDY GUIDES
BYC provides a study guide along with the textbook and other course materials for each course that includes the syllabus with instructions about how to complete the course, a list of suggested reading beyond the required course materials, and guidance for exam preparation. This BYC course study guide lists and explains all the course assignments composed of sample questions about the main points of the course textbook. It also includes a tutorial and other study aids to help prepare students for their final exam for the course. Students should carefully follow this study guide that BYC provides for each course.
ACADEMIC ADVISORS
At the time of educational program enrollment, BYC assigns to each student an academic advisor who counsels and assists the student with his or her studies as well as interactions with the BYC administration throughout their entire educational program of study with BYC. The academic assistance that BYC academic advisors provide includes discussion and correction of the practice assignments in the course study guides as part of a systematic preparation for course exams. Students may especially wish to seek the assistance of their BYC academic advisor before scheduling their final exams with their course instructors.
For this purpose, academic advisors and students communicate regularly in order to discuss the main topics and to test the student’s level of preparation for exams. Generally, these communications between students and their BYC academic advisors are conducted via e-mail, e-forum, or telephone, and optionally at periodic CSB residential seminars.
BYC provides each of its academic advisors with a guidance manual that contains instructions about how to assist the students assigned to them. Although students may request a change of the assignment of their academic advisor, this assignment usually remains the same for the duration of their educational program of study. Nonetheless, BYC will make every effort to satisfy its students with the assignment of their academic advisor.
